“Last year was a very hard year for us. In the fourth quarter we have improved quite a bit and so I see there is much more improvement going forward. In the second half of the year we will be ready for new capacity,” chief executive Benyamin Ismail (pic) said after announcing the low-cost airline’s partnership with MY ecolodge.
KUALA LUMPUR: Airasia X Bhd (AAX) will take delivery of two Airbus planes this year after a deferment in 2015.

“These are not new orders but those that we held back following our rationalisation last year. I just slowed the delivery of the aircraft to this year and last year we cut capacity but now we are in a better position,” chief executive Benyamin Ismail (pic) said.

“Last year was a very hard year for us. In the fourth quarter we have improved quite a bit and so I see there is much more improvement going forward. In the second half of the year we will be ready for new capacity,” he said after announcing the low-cost airline’s partnership with MY ecolodge.

The long haul carrier said that it expected to launch several new routes this year and load factors would sustain at some 83% this year with capacity expanding at 10%-15%.

“We think we can add to capacity as demand is still there. The important thing is that the market is much more rational now – fuel costs are down and yields are up,” he said.

“I am quite happy that we are doing quite okay,” he said.

He said that AAX would “put some capacity back into the system” for routes such as Australia after a cutback last year.

“On Hawaii, we have been waiting for the US Federal Aviation Administration to approve the destination,” he said.

On the higher charges to be imposed by the Department of Civil Aviation, he said they would not have an impact to the airline’s profit margins as AAX could find other ways to mitigate the impact.
