Koon Yew Yin RM50 million donation to build Student Hostel, Penang

Meeting Penang Chief Minister and Exco Members

10th Feb 2017

Koon Yew Yin Speech

The purpose of this meeting is for me to explain why I want to donate Rm 50 million to the Penang State Government to build student hostel and to introduce all the volunteer professionals involved in the project to the Chief Minister and the Exco Members.

As you all know, our ultimate in life is happiness and if you can make people happy you should be happy. I believe this student hostel will create a lot of happiness.

I must thank Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and the Exco members for the speedy approval of all the design drawings especially YB Lim Hock Seng who is in charge of State Planning and essential services.

I have the pleasure to introduce the following people who have kindly volunteered their professional services:

Chief Architect Lee Thean Hock

Penang Resident Architect Mr Ooi

Civil & Structural Engineers Mr.Wong Lim Chin & Mr. Rudy Lee

Mechanical and Electrical Engineer Mr Ooi

Quantity Surveyor Mr Eng

I wish to record my gratitude for their professional services without which this student hostel cannot be built.

Let me tell you why I am so happy to donate Rm 50 million to build this student hostel in Penang without any profit incentive. All the net income from this project will be for helping students. After I die, I hope the trustees will use all the net income to achieve my objective of helping students.

About 10 years ago, I started giving scholarships to help poor students to complete their tertiary education in UTAR. Up till now, I have given more than 300 scholarships, mostly to UTAR students.

About 6 years ago, I offered to donate Rm 30 million to UTAR to build student hostel within the University campus without any profit incentive. My donation offer was rejected because the MCA leaders who owns hundreds of acres of land just outside the University, did not want my student hostel within the university campus to disturb his lucrative property development business. Currently UTAR has more than 20,000 students and all of them are paying extremely high rental for houses built by the MCA leaders.

The rejection of my donation was not publicised by the newspapers because the MCA also controls the news media. However, due to this disgraceful episode and other issues, MCA lost most their state and parliamentary seats in the last general election.

In fact, I canvassed for DAP candidate, Dr Ko Chong Sen who beat MCA leader, Dato Lee Chee Leong, a former Minister, by a very wide margin of more than 5,000 votes.

I have been a strong supporter of DAP for a long time especially in Perak. DAP won all their allotted 18 state seats in the last few general elections. Unfortunately, Parti Keadilan and PAS lost most of their allotted seats.

I admire DAP’s excellent performance in governing Penang. As a result, the Government has been making more and more money every year since DAP started governing about 8 years ago. The Government has also been spending more and more money in infrastructure and other facilities for the benefit of the people.

My Rm 50 million donation to the Penang Government to build student hostel is a demonstration of my trust in DAP. I believe this student hostel will be a shining monument and a reminder of the excellent DAP Government of Penang.

I believe my Rm 50 million donation will encourage more people to support DAP and the opposition to kick out the corrupted BN Government in the next general election.
