GEORGE TOWN: Globetronics Technology Bhd  new sensors will enlarge the group’s customer base by roping in several top Asian manufacturers of smartphones, wearable devices and automotive components.

Group chief executive officer Datuk Heng Huck Lee told StarBiz that the sensors were on the final product qualification phase.

“The sensors have built-in intelligence to assess and measure the level of contamination in our surroundings that could be hazardous to our health.

“Major smart device and automotive players are now evaluating our latest sensors for use in their latest devices scheduled for release in late-2019. There are other and more detailed functions which would be revealed soon, as our customers require us to maintain a high level of confidentiality,” said Heng.

According to Heng, if it gets the green light, the commercial production should commence in the third quarter of 2019.

Heng added that the group had partnered with a US company to design and develop this new sensors. “Non-conventional semiconductor packaging technology and semiconductor materials were used to produce the intelligent and hybrid sensors,” Heng added.

The sensors come under the biosensor category, which is expected to hit US$27bil in sales by 2022, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 8.4% between 2017 and 2022, according to a Markets and Markets report.

“The market growth is driven by the continuous technological advancements in the biosensor ecosystem, increase in the use of biosensors for non-medical applications, lucrative growth in point-of-care diagnostics, and rise in the demand for glucose monitoring systems,” the report added.
