PETALING JAYA: Key Asic Bhd said it is seeing a significant demand surge for its chips that go into making ventilators.

Ventilators are in huge demand globally as they are needed for the treatment of Covid-19 patients in the hospitals.

“We have started the design platform of the next generation of ventilators that is powered by the latest Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies as they can provide significantly better therapeutic effect to patients and enables frontline healthcare professionals to control the ventilators and monitor the patients from a distance or remotely, ” said chairman of Key Asic Eg Kah Yee.

“A total new generation of intelligent equipment in the hospitals based on IoMT and AI technologies is needed to deal with the extremely contagious and increasingly complex diseases, ” he added.

Key Asic is a technology company that designs and markets chips to customers in Asia, US and Europe.

Ventilators are largely computerized machines with multiple chips and display monitors.

The company said that its next generation of ventilators will have to be designed with the IoMT and AI technologies to meet new requirements due to the ongoing pandemic.

“Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we experienced orders soaring by multiple times for the chips that are used in the ventilators. With the number of infections still climbing in many countries and some are sharper than others, we foresee the demand continues to be strong for the rest of the year and perhaps next year as well, ” said the CEO of RAiO International, a Taiwan technology company and Key Asic’s client CT Su.

“Based on the models, experts are predicting a second wave of infection can recur once the lockdowns are relaxed in several countries, ” he added.

In addition to RAiO, there are two other Key Asic’s customers that have chips used in the ventilators.

“The fabrication capacity is limited due to movement control order but we have reprioritized and stepped up our production now, ” said Silterra CEO Firdaus Abdullah.

Silterra is also another client of Key Asic.
