MoF Inc to secure 5G license

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoF Inc) through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be issued a licence to roll out 5G network infrastructure in the country, said Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek.

There will be no change in ownership of the SPV for ten years after the award. There will also be no auction process for the 5G spectrum allocation, he told a media briefing today.

The 5G spectrum identified for 5G includes 700MHz, 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands.

The roll out of 5G in the country will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, he adds.

The move to allocate spectrum to the SPV for 5G spectrum has surprised the market place even though all the mobile players had conducted trials and hoped for spectrum to roll out 5G. Now, these players will be reduced to become service providers for 5G by leasing network infrastructure from MOF Inc. But they will not have to invest in the infrastructure roll out.

This hopefully translates to cheaper and better services for consumers.MOF Inc will set up a new special purpose vehicle to roll out 5G
