Oct 2020 – According to the International Diabetes Federation, there are just below 1.8 million undiagnosed diabetics in Malaysia. It is estimated that 17 out of every 100 in Malaysia is suffering from this chronic yet silent condition. One of the most common complication from diabetes is diabetic retinopathy which is asymptomatic during early stages but can lead to blindness when it takes a turn for the worse.
On the 10th of this month, EyRIS formalised a Memorandum of Understanding with OasisEye Specialists, effectively appointing the first eye centre in Malaysia to implement EyRIS’s ground-breaking eye and possibly systemic screening software in future. The MOU also includes collaboration on several fronts such as community screening programs and promotional activities for new product launches.
With immediate effect, patients can enjoy the convenience of having state of the art AI via a photograph of the retina to detect retina diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, at OasisEye Specialists, located in Nexus, Bangsar South or at Healthscan, in Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL), an OasisEye strategic partner.
The MOU was signed by Mr Lai Teik Kin, CEO EyRIS and Dr Kenneth Fong, Managing Director of OasisEye Specialists.
“OasisEye Specialists is excited to be chosen as the first eye centre in Malaysia to collaborate with EyRIS for their ground-breaking eye and systemic screening software. We hope to be able to detect eye diseases at a much earlier stage to protect our patients from avoidable blindness. Concurrently by obtaining retinal images from a tertiary cardiovascular center and a tertiary ophthalmology centre, we envisage to contribute to the current database of patients that EyRIS has. Research opportunities in identifying bio markers for various common eye diseases in Malaysia can also be explored,” said Dr Fong.
“EyRIS is pleased that to have found a strong partner to jointly launch our services in Malaysia. Under the visionary leadership of Dr Fong, OasisEye has taken a giant step to incorporate artificial intelligence systems to deliver quality eye care to their patients and collect data to further strengthen current AI algorithms or develop new ones. We look forward to a very productive partnership with OasisEye,” said Mr Lai.
EyRIS develops and deploys artificial intelligence systems to automatically screen retinal images for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration – diseases that lead to preventable blindness. Jointly developed by the Singapore Eye Research Institute and National University of Singapore, the technology can significantly reduce public health care cost while maintaining standard of care.
